Contraindications

Seizure disorder, Cardiovascular disease, Being pregnant, Recent surgery within the last 2 months, Chronic respiratory disease, Asthma (although Breathwork has actually been shown to help heal asthma, but it is technically on the contraindication list so I am required to warn you – if you do choose to do Breathwork with asthma PLEASE make sure you have your rescue inhaler next to you), Severe mental illness (eg. Schizophrenia – this is a hypothetical risk as I would not be surprised if Breathwork could actually be quite beneficial in this population, but it is on the list so I put it here).

It is important to understand that all of these contraindications are listed in order to be overly cautious.  Breathwork is one of the safest healing techniques out there (MUCH safer than the pills I prescribe). We breathe everyday, all the time. There are NO cases of severe adverse events from Breathwork (unless you do it underwater – don’t do that). The worst thing that could happen is you pass out for a few seconds (like little kids who hold their breath until they pass out), but you are lying down which is the safest position to be in and when you come to, you will be perfectly safe to jump back into the breathing practice.

Please, remember YOU ARE IN CONTROL. You can always slow your breathing down if it gets too intense. One modification that people with contraindications who still want to experience Transformational Breathwork can try is to breathe in and out of your nose instead of your mouth in the beginning phase. It will decrease the intensity but can still be very healing.

It goes without saying that you are embarking on this Breathwork journey at your own risk. If you have any questions or concerns, please ask your doctor first (and if I am your doctor, then we have already talked about this). Your body will tell you what to do – so listen to your body as your breath does its magic.
